Whether you are beginning to write your first resume, or updating a current resume, you will progress through these lessons fairly easily. This is a step-by-step procedure for writing effective resumes. The steps fit all types of resumes and all types of jobs for which people apply. At the end of this course, you should have a quality resume ready to be sent to prospective employers.

Remember that there are three basic types of resumes:

CHRONOLOGICAL--emphasizes career growth and work experience
-Staying in same field as past jobs
-Job history shows real growth and development
-Past titles are highly impressive
-Name of last employer is important
-Want to emphasize employment history

FUNCTIONAL--emphasizes functions or areas of skills
-Looking for your first job
-Changing career goals or work history
-Skills are more impressive than work history
-Have been absent from the job market for a while
-Changed employers too frequently

TARGETED--highlights capabilities/skills and supporting accomplishments for a specific job target
-Want to make an impressive case for a specific
job target
-Very clear about job direction or skill focus
-Willing to write a resume for each job target
-Have skills, but not necessarily long, impressive
history in those skills
